A traumatic event can be anything from a car crash to a natural disaster. It can also include experiencing violence, being threatened or witnessing  assault or abuse . Being involved or seeing such an event can lead to difficulty moving on and symptoms of trauma can be variable. Symptoms differ from person to person.  Some common symptoms include:


  • Stress/anxiety/panic attacks
  • Insomnia/nightmares
  • Using drugs or alcohol to cope
  • Distressing memories/flashbacks
  • Panic attacks
  • Anger
  • Depression
  • Loss of self-esteem
  • Feeling detached from other people
  • Re-living


Sometimes people can find that the symptoms don’t improve and can get worse. If the symptoms persist for months this may be post traumatic stress disorder.
